Earlier this month, Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 563 into law; the bill will continue the process of stove change-outs.
Changing out one dirty, inefficient wood stove is equivalent to taking five old diesel buses off the road, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Wood Smoke Reduction Program will provide voluntary incentives to Californians to replace old, uncertified wood-burning stoves with more energy-efficient alternatives.
All good news, but there’s a piece missing: in Santa Barbara County nothing is stopping the construction of new residences with woodburning stoves and fireplaces. Unlike in L.A. County and the entire South Coast Air Quality Management District’s 4-county region, where you can’t build a residence with a woodburning stove or fireplace.
