Portland’s Air Pollution – Awakening to a Nightmare

Legions of concerned parents are organizing on Portland’s eastside as every few days brings new revelations of toxic emissions spewing from Bullseye Glass.

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) was doing routine air quality monitoring, looking for the common polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and woodsmoke’s particulate matter residue when the Forest Service showed them a new way to scan – by analyzing tree moss. This $50 per sample approach quickly led to dire surprises: the glass manufacturer was dumping cadmium and arsenic into the airshed – impacting nearby neighborhoods and schools. Even more sobering, apparently Bullseye has been operating with little regard for their neighbors’ health for decades.
